Cricket might be the mainstream sport in India, but sports such as Football, Lawn Tennis, Badminton and Kabaddi, to name a few, have no shortage of followers in the country. Young aspiring players still look up to the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Lionel Messi, LeBron James and Rafael Nadal, amongst others, when they start playing sports. But pursuing sports other than cricket is full of challenges. Lack of opportunities is one big factor dissuading young athletes, and another being the fragile ecosystem, which offers no clear pathway for young athletes, is another big reason why they are yet to see a Grand Slam winner from India.
